We try to stay positive when we look back at the past year. To be honest, we’re happy 2020 is about to be over! Covid-19 put a big pause on almost everything. The holiday festivities may be canceled, but you can still celebrate New Year’s within your household! Here are some different ways you can celebrate the New Year with your pets and stay Covid-19 safe!

Skip the Traveling this Year

If you usually travel with your pet, consider skipping it this year! Depending on the pet, flying or driving somewhere can cause a great deal of stress. Traveling this year increases the chance of getting and spreading Covid-19. Because of this, the CDC recommends postponing travel plans and celebrating at home.

Wear a Mask!

Celebrating with people outside of your household? Please consider wearing a mask at all times. We understand it’s a nuisance, but it’s our best option to keep the disease under control.

Social <——> Distance

Unless they are in your household, your New Year’s Eve kiss may need to turn into elbow bumps. Masks should still be worn in addition to staying at least 6 feet apart, especially when indoors around people who don’t live in your household. You are more likely to spread Covid-19 when you are in close contact with others. Please avoid large gatherings, crowds, and poorly ventilated areas.

Keep Anxious Pets in a Safe Space

Sometimes, New Years and pets don’t mix. If you have an anxious pet, find a secure and safe place for them to hide during the celebration. A crate with a blanket over it or a dark room with a fortress of linens are a great option. If your pet is still anxious, ask your local vet about anti-anxiety medications.

No Booze for the Pets!

This one is a no brainer but we get cases of alcohol toxicity too often. Keep your booze in a higher place and away from your furry friends. If you believe your pet has consumed alcohol or any dangerous substance, please contact your local animal emergency facility. Our local emergency hospitals are the Animal Urgent Care of South Orange County in Mission Viejo and VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists in Tustin.

Fireworks and Pets are a No-Go

Not many people realize this… fireworks are very dangerous. Our pets don’t know this and only see pretty lights. Every year, there are cases of animals getting badly burned from these illuminations. Please keep your pets away from lit fireworks and their ash debris.

Fatty Foods = Fatty Pets

Just because you can, doesn’t mean your pet can gorge on foods not meant for them. Please don’t feed your pets fatty junk food. We want to keep them as healthy and fit as possible so they can live a long life!

Whatever you do this year, please do it cautiously. You know yourself and your pet best! Remember that this is a time of remembrance of the past year and a celebration of new beginnings! Have a Happy New Year!
